Infertility Q&A

What causes infertility?

Infertility experts say about one-third of infertility issues are due to female-related factors, and male problems are the cause in another one-third of cases.

In the remaining one-third of cases, infertility is attributed to a combination of both female and male factors or unknown reasons.

When a woman isn’t getting pregnant, the reasons can be complicated. Issues with ovulation, such as ovulating irregularly or not at all, cause the majority of cases of female-related infertility.

Other factors affect your ability to get pregnant, including:

  • Age
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Structural issues, such as blocked fallopian tubes

Thankfully, medical advances today can address many of these issues. The team of expert providers at Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC are here to help you find the underlying cause, or causes, for why you haven’t conceived.

When should I have an infertility evaluation?

The medical world defines infertility as the inability to get pregnant after a year of trying to conceive. Over age 35, the standard is six months of trying.

If you've been trying unsuccessfully for some time, an infertility workup identifies the root cause(s) for why you and your partner haven't become pregnant.

Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC provides comprehensive infertility evaluations to pinpoint the source(s) of infertility and help you achieve the family you’ve always wanted.

How do I find out what is causing infertility?

An infertility workup is a multi-stage process. Your provider begins with a comprehensive medical history. They ask about your periods, whether you've experienced abnormal bleeding, or have a history of pregnancies or miscarriages, among other questions.

Your assessment includes a pelvic exam and may include blood work to check your hormone levels. Your provider may suggest an ultrasound to determine whether structural issues may play a role. This service is conveniently available onsite.

Once your provider knows what's causing infertility, they create a fertility plan.

What are treatment options for infertility?

Expect your provider to suggest a series of options to help you achieve a successful pregnancy. They may recommend fertility drugs to address a hormonal issue or irregular periods.

If a growth or blockage is affecting your fertility, they can recommend a procedure to address the problem.
